The project site is located on the northwest edge of the male dormitory area at Tunghai University, characterized by an irregular shape. The northwest side faces the pedestrian sidewalk of Taiwan Boulevard, with a continuous wall and a motorcycle parking lot separating the campus from the outside. There is a height difference of about 3 meters between the campus and the outside. The southeast sides are adjacent to the courtyards of the male dormitories.
The male dormitories, designed during the early founding period of Tunghai University, followed the concept of extended courtyard-style design, where the void space is the main feature. The goal was to allow faculty and students to explore the relationship between people and nature within these spaces. We hope the new dormitories can embody the spirit of "liberal arts," moving away from the enclosed dormitory concept and incorporating more of a "home" feeling. At the same time, we aim to leverage the relationship with Taiwan Boulevard and the entrance/exit of the motorcycle parking lot, opening up the campus boundaries, revitalizing the originally peripheral area, and providing more comprehensive service facilities to the dormitory area through shared spaces.
We respond through several strategies:
1. Opening up Tunghai University's closed red brick walls, breaking down the barriers between the campus and the city. We plan to use elevated green corridors to bridge the height difference between the city and the campus, connecting the two spaces and shaping a campus entrance.
The setback area facing Taiwan Boulevard will form a linear plaza, serving as a buffer zone between the city and the campus, offering pedestrian spaces for resting and gathering. Surrounding shops will enliven the sidewalks and plaza. We will take advantage of the topographical height difference to organize activities at different levels and create multi-layered continuous open spaces. The motorcycle parking lot will be transformed into an elevated green corridor, with landscaped stairs and ramps integrating the different layers, effectively connecting the city and campus, and shaping a new entrance image for the campus. We will also improve the pedestrian sidewalk, adding street furniture and green spaces to provide a comfortable walking environment.
2. Redefining the new campus boundary, encouraging mutual interaction between campus and city activities while maintaining a clear spatial distinction between the two.
We will use a perforated curtain wall to form a new urban interface, providing a human-scaled urban space on the outside, while clearly defining the campus space on the inside and ensuring the privacy of the dormitory units.
3. Vertical extended courtyard.
We increased the height of the building mass, reducing the building footprint to maximize the preservation of existing greenery and trees, resonating with the courtyards of the male dormitory area. Using unique architectural elements of Tunghai University, we will continue the integrity of the campus fabric, connecting spaces with voids to reinterpret the concept of "extended courtyard." We also hope to recreate courtyard life experiences in vertical spaces, connecting room units, shared spaces, corridors, courtyards, and communities in a multi-layered manner. Through corridors and stair plazas, we will connect the new dormitory area with the old one, creating a broader outdoor public space.
4. Creating a sense of "home" through a group-based spatial structure, fulfilling the spirit of "residential learning."
Each dormitory room will have an independent bathroom and pantry, with every 14 dormitory units forming a cluster that shares a double-height kitchen and common room. Each cluster can be further connected through outdoor staircases, with the ground floor providing meeting rooms, laundry rooms, and fitness facilities. This way, multiple clusters will combine to form a vertical dormitory courtyard. The multi-layered public common spaces will allow students to freely use and adapt the spaces, fostering connections and interactions among students within each group, embodying the liberal arts education in everyday life.
